White Paper: Evaluation of the ARAS HD ICATS System in Relation to the RICSAC Staged Crash Events

August 14, 2013

Abstract:

ARAS HD is a software application designed to allow users to draw crash scene diagrams from electronic measurements or hand measurements, and to create three-dimensional animations and scene models. It also contains a 2.5D (2D with terrain following) simulation tool called ICATS (Interactive Collision and Trajectory Simulation). ICATS is based on the original published SMAC (Simulation Model of Automobile Collisions) algorithms produced for NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) in the 1970s.

The results generated by this tool are often taken to both criminal and civil trials at which the accuracy of the tool will be questioned. This means that the user of the system must be able to describe how the tool works in terms of foundational mathematical algorithms. Users must also give information on the accuracy of the tool in relation to staged crashes. The validation procedure must be described and documented for review by non-scientific parties. This paper describes the way the ICATS system in ARAS HD works and the method and results of the validation study.

Applying the Advanced Human Model to the Zimmerman/Martin Case

July 9, 2013

In the CSI version of ARAS HD, there is an Advanced Human Model that includes anatomically correct layers. This model allows our users to both pose the model, as well as display 8 different layers of anatomy to explain gunshot trajectories, and other causes of death and injury.

In the following series of snapshots, we posed 2 human models to approximate the positions of Martin (allegedly on top) and Zimmerman (allegedly on bottom with head on sidewalk). We sized both models to the correct sizes and posed them as a witness and Zimmerman suggest. Then, we placed a handgun in Zimmerman’s hand at the approximate position to be in "mid range" for firing into Martin.

We then snapped a virtual gunshot trajectory rod from the gun towards Martin. Next, we removed the anatomy layers to show how the trajectory intersects Martin’s heart as per the autopsy report.

As a tool of explanation, it worked very well on this case and appears consistent with known facts. In creating this model, since we are working in true scale, any inconsistencies would have appeared. The total time expenditure in ARAS HD to create the models in position with the trajectory was about 15 minutes.

Human Model

Models positioned on the scene

Human Model Layers

Outer body removed to show skeletal view of trajectory and rib cage.

Model Layers

View rotated to show alignment longitudinally.

Circulatory Layer

Skeleton removed to show heart and gunshot trajectory passing through heart.

Customer compares ARAS HD to Visual Statement products

May 15, 2013

Every day, professional reconstructionists, both private and public sector, are switching to ARAS HD. We can tell you many reasons why, but our customers say it the best.

"I have formerly used Visual Statement FX and Edge as well as CrashZone. I have used ARAS 360, and now use ARAS HD, exclusively since their introductions. For a time I continued to compare the Visual Statement programs, but quickly determined that for me ARAS was by far the better product. I could create and present a professional and accurate crash scene representation in a fraction of the time needed for the former systems, saving my client money and leaving them more budget to use for other needed services.

The intuitive controls and the simple insertion of satellite images and site photographs creates a realistic view that I feel is unsurpassed by any other program out there. To top all of that, the immediate service and professional advice from the ARAS staff have made for very little down time and a quick learning curve. Simply put, ARAS HD is a great value, easy and quick to learn and use, and produces a professional result for a minimum of time and money.

Please keep breaking those barriers..."

Sgt. Chris Jaekl

"ARAS 360 HD is one of the easiest programs for the reconstructionist to use. ARAS 360 HD allows the user to complete an investigation in 3D, in one program from start to finish. The intuitive interface speeds up the investigation and presents a complete picture for later court proceedings."

White Paper: Digital Terrain Model Generation in ARAS 360 HD Software

April 30, 2013

ARAS 360 Technologies announces a white paper outlining the application of unique scientific methods to generate a precise three-dimensional terrain model through the use of aerial imagery and survey data.

Many crashes occur on terrain that cannot be assumed to be flat. In many cases, if investigators made the assumption that the surface on which the vehicles collided was flat, it would introduce serious errors to any analysis or computation of reconstruction findings.

A DTM (Digital Terrain Model) has been developed in the ARAS 360 HD software product to allow investigators to model the scene three dimensionally by uniting the scene measurements with accurate satellite or aerial images. The procedure is described and reviewed in this paper.

Meet the SAMI System

March means new technology from ARAS 360 Technologies. ARAS HD users will soon be able to calculate the impact speeds of colliding vehicles using momentum and simulation together. The SAMI (Simulated Angular Momentum Interactive) system blends SMAC (Simulation Model of Automobile Collisions) technology with angular momentum analysis to deliver a truly interactive solution for determining the impact speeds of colliding vehicles. See the introduction to SAMI below.

After generating your scene in ARAS HD, you can apply the SAMI system directly on the scene, align the vectors, and determine speeds. Then, to validate your results, click the button to instantly simulate the damage profiles on the colliding vehicles. SAMI will also allow you to simulate the spin out trajectory to assist in understanding the correct post impact assignment of deceleration. Finally, use the SAMI system to automatically generate a fully 3D animation of your results.

This month, new and existing ARAS HD customers can take advantage of our introductory pricing. Purchase SAMI before March 31, 2013 and receive 50% off!

Tips & Tricks: Manipulating Dynamic Models

October 18, 2012

Need a fence that you don't see in the dynamic model library? Many of our dynamic objects can be quickly and easily edited to suit your needs. In this example, we'll look at changing our vertical wooden fence into a popular wrought iron fence.

fences

Just follow these simple steps:

1. On the Draw tab, use the Line tool to draw a "Wood Fence (Vertical)."

Draw Tab

2. On the left-hand properties panel, set the posts, horizontal boards, and the vertical boards to the appropriate dimensions, outlined in the image below.

inputs

3. Finally, under "Horizontal Boards Texture," "Vertical Boards Texture," and "Post Texture," set each texture to "Blank." Ensure that the color of each is set to black.

We now have a realistic wrought iron fence. So, if you ever need a fence that you don't see in the dynamic object library, remember that editing the properties can make a big difference! As always, if you have any questions, please feel free to contact tech support at support@aras360.com

ARAS HD and Crime Scene Reconstruction on CBS This Morning

July 25, 2012

Late afternoon July 24, 2012, CBS News contacted ARAS 360 Technologies to request assistance in presenting technology demonstrating the approach to modelling major crime scenes and presenting 3D animations. One of our customers, Hal Sherman, had referred ARAS 360 Technologies. After a brief conversation with the news team at CBS, ARAS determined what CBS needed and created a 3D scene model and animation sequence. This animation depicts how measuring equipment, like total stations, can be used to map a crime scene. Evidence points can be entered and the crime scene story can be told using a 3D animation in a very short period of time. Using measuring devices, and the cutting edge technology that ARAS 360 Technologies provides, is the most accurate way to investigate, re-create, and present any case in court.

Most important is the fact that within one hour of the CBS request, ARAS had sent them a 3D model of a crime scene complete with animation. We combined all of the elements of our CSI functionality including interfacing with total stations and laser scanners, posing and animating human models, as well as animating gunshots.

Click the link below to see the news broadcast on CBS News featuring ARAS 360 HD software, just hours after the request for the animation was received:

Speed caused fatal crash involving police car, experts say -
Former Memphis officer charged with vehicular homicide in 2009 death

By: Lawrence Buser

Two accident reconstruction experts testified Friday that a police officer's "excessive speed" was the cause of a fatal crash in 2009 in Frayser that killed a woman and critically injured her teenage passenger.

Jurors in the vehicular homicide case against former officer Mark Weatherly also viewed computerized animations* that depicted the crash that killed motorist Stephanie Montague, 40, and injured her passenger, Tiffany McGhee, 17.

Weatherly was driving at speeds of up to 101 mph moments before his 2008 Dodge Charger police cruiser, which was northbound on a hilly section of Range Line Road, struck the left front side of Montague's westbound Nissan Altima as she pulled from a stop sign on Orman Avenue. Weatherly was heading back to his North Precinct at the end of his shift.

Tennessee Highway Patrol Sgt. Andy Shelton and private accident reconstructionist Daniel Billington of Crashteams GREAT LAKES in Bay City, Mich., told jurors Weatherly's speed was the primary cause of the crash.

"It's not possible for her to see him coming" over the hilly strech of Range Line, said Shelton. "He clearly could have seen her if he was going the speed limit."

The speed limit on Range Line is 40 mph.

Defense attorney Ted Hansom noted in questioning the experts that the data-retrieval devices in the police vehicle are not monitored for accuracy by any governmental body as are black boxes in airlines.

After viewing a series of short animations* of the crash viewed from different angles, each one showing the Altima stopping at the stop sign before proceeding, the attorney asked Billington what report or witness statement he relied upon in determining that the Altima did not run the stop sign.

"There isn't one," Billington replied.

Billington determined that Montague was going about 12 mph and that Weatherly was traveling at 67 mph at the time of impact. Shelton said his calculations showed the Altima traveling at 18 mph and the police car at 67 mph.

Prosecutors Glen Baity and Doug Carricker rested their case Friday, and the defense will have an opportunity to present proof when the trial before Judge Lee Coffee resumes today.

* While they were accepted in court, these animations cannot be posted at this time as the case is being retried.

Advanced Imagery for Terrain Mapping -
Thanks to Saskatchewan Police Departments

June 20, 2011

At an ARAS 360 software training class in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan we had the unique opportunity to work with the RCMP, Regina Police Services, and Saskatoon Police Services. All of these police organizations utilize remote helicopter platforms to capture at scene aerial images. The results are incredible and work amazingly well with with the ARAS 360 terrain system. Sgt. Dave Domoney and his team were kind enough to supply their electric, 6 rotor, Draganfly mini-chopper - equipped with a digital camera. Less than 5 minutes from the time the storage box was removed from the recon truck, the chopper was airborne and taking shots. The chopper is very easy to manage and provides a very stable aerial platform, thanks to the 6 rotor configuration. It makes very little sound and can be navigated very precisely. An option called GPS hold allows almost hands-free control. The camera we used was a 10 megapixel Luminex. While the RCMP "pilots" were flying their machine, the Saskatoon Police Services experts were shooting the same scene with a Sokkia total station.

Dragonfly Saskatchewan

Both were done within 20 minutes.

In the classroom, we imported the aerial image into ARAS 360, then downloaded the total station measurements. We then aligned the total station points with points in the aerial photo and clicked - "Create 3D Terrain." The resulting 3D terrain model was amazing. This process is illustrated below.

The Aerial Image.

The Sokkia Total Station Points.

Then, we simply clicked this button.

And...

ARAS View

This is the resulting rendered view.

Real View

The real scene is almost identical to the ARAS 360 3D Model.

This scene is an excellent example of a precise terrain model in ARAS 360 thanks to a team effort of integrating the remote chopper image with total station points. It was done in the field in a matter of approximately 30 minutes and completed in the classroom in 15 minutes.

Many thanks to the Saskatchewan police departments, and especially Sgt. Dave Domoney of the Saskatchewan RCMP, who have found an excellent way to precisely model any crash or crime scene.

Case Settles From ARAS 360 Animation

March 10, 2011

"Using ARAS 360, we have already successfully settled three mediation cases, preventing costly trials in each.  ARAS 360 quickly allows us to create an animation consistent with the evidence, accurately representing the events as they occurred. When I needed an animated pedestrian walk pole ARAS delivered in a very short time, helping to demonstrate the energy dissipation after the crash.  In that same matter, once we placed a camera into our driver’s position, we realized that the oncoming car causing the crash was totally hidden from view as it raced closely behind a second vehicle. Case settled, justice was served -- ARAS 360 is the real deal.  This is an incredible tool!"

ARAS 360 Training Well Worth the Long Journey

January 12, 2011

Dalton BrownDalton Brown, Motor Vehicle Collision (MVC) Forensics, Ontario, Canada, travelled all the way to Las Vegas, NV to attend ARAS 360 training with ARAS' professional instructor, Brad Booth.

I found the course very enlightening, I learned a lot. In my mind, it was well worth the expense and travelling round trip the 6,880 kms (4,275 miles) to be there.

The webinars are great but it doesn't beat being there for formal training and being able to talk one on one with the instructor and having the other attendees to help out with their knowledge and assistance. The reference manual was very good. Now it is up to me to continue on and keep learning as well.

ARAS 360 Animation Averts Trial

December 10, 2010

crash siteIn the early morning hours of May 19, 2007, a weary tractor trailer driver travelling north on Interstate 95 in Connecticut pulled over and parked illegally on the shoulder of an exit ramp. The driver, unfortunately, did not display any emergency markers, flares or even have his emergency lights flashing.

Some time later, a van exiting the same ramp apparently unable to recognize the truck as a hazard, struck the back of it. The driver was killed.

We could have called this article ARAS 360's First Court Accepted Case except the ARAS 360 animation produced for this accident was so convincing, the case was settled before it went to trial: the plaintiff side was awarded the maximum.

Reflective triangles were used in the animation even though they were not present at the scene of the accident to ARAS Case 1 animationdemonstrate that if the driver, in fact, had fallen asleep at the wheel, which was speculated, running over them would have surely woken him up and may have averted the crash in the first place. The tractor trailer driver was cited for illegal and improper parking.

The animator, Chet Tomlinson out of St. Johns, FL (also a professional ARAS 360 trainer) was able to create this animation in a fraction of the time it would have taken using his previous accident reconstruction software. Chet says he actually would not have been able to effectively recreate this animation using the competitor's software because it would have simply bogged down his computer. Watch the video.

ARAS 360 Impresses Attendess at SATAI Conference
Glendale, AZ

July 16-17, 2010

Forensic Mapping ClassMike Greenfield of ARAS 360 demonstrated the software's power and ease of use when tasked to use ARAS 360 to animate a two vehicle collision T intersection crash.

During the conference I was given the opportunity to address all the attendees and present ARAS 360. I animated the crash in front of the entire class over a real clear Google image after merging the total station measurements with the image. The entire process took less than 10 minutes. I answered all their questions by showing examples of the ARAS 360 program. It was a major "demo " for everyone, and they were all impressed with ARAS 360.

Reconstructionists around the world are talking about ARAS 360

July 12, 2010

Forensic Mapping ClassI took a (forensic mapping) class recently where ARAS 360 was introduced to the audience. My first thought was "FANTASTIC!"

Yes, ARAS 360, compared to the software that I've used in the past, is beyond the imagination of every AR software user.

I've already bought ARAS 360 and I can't wait to use it!

Excitement builds at IPTM Conference

May 5, 2010

IPTM trade showMike Greenfield, Chief Field Operations Manager (USA) for ARAS 360 recently attended the IPTM Conference in Orlando, Florida to demonstrate our new software. Overall, it was an overwhelming success, leaving reconstructionists extremely impressed with the unique features of ARAS 360. Don't take our word for it!

"I am totally impressed with the new ARAS 360 software. The learning curve  looks easier than the software I am currently using. I certainly like the way it takes a Google map and conforms it to the total station information.  Working in 3D without stopping and going back to "fix " specific items is great. The library of buildings, cars, etc far exceeds any software that is currently on the market. And the best part of your software is the free updates and NO yearly fees.

Keep me informed when you launch the program."
